"Iterations 2008" May 1st through May 30th. 9 Main St., Beard Building Gallery Opening reception: Friday May 2nd, from 5:00 -7:30 pm
Iterations is back for a 2008 exhibit with fresh new concepts to keep this original arts initiative of Cortland vibrant and relevant. Fourteen completed works will be on display at the Beard Building Gallery. This year, seven works of art on canvas, and seven works of art on paper of varying sizes from 4’ x 2’ to 8” x 28” have been circulating to area artists age 2-93. Seven of the pieces began with children painting from their memory and imaginations. The other seven pieces are a photomontage of Cortland County contemporary and historical photographs thanks to local photographers and the Cortland County Historical Society. Conceiver of the project, Reagen Troutman, decided to use this year’s compositions to generate local folklore as a unique approach to Iterations 2008. Each piece of art has a story to tell that brings together different parts of Cortland’s richness and history to life. Iterations 2008 is made possible by sponsorship from the Cortland County Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Cultural Council of Cortland County, The Downtown Partnership, Pinstriped Pokadots, YWCA of Cortland, with partial funding by a NYSCA DEC Grant, and the creative talent of Cortland County! All 14 works of art will be auctioned off online at: cortlandarts.cmarket.com. The online auction begins on May 2 and concludes on May 31. Bids start at $45 dollars per piece of artwork. All works of art have between 5-8 artists collaborating on them and over 20 hours of work into each piece. Last year’s Iterations project was a complete sell out. Proceeds for the sale of Iterations 2008 will go to fund next year’s project.

Tom Haskell’s “Faces of Africa” Borg Warner Morse TEC gallery Center For the Arts 72 South Main St., Homer Open Monday – Friday from 12 – 5
Of this exhibit, Mr. Haskell says, “I was always amazed in my travels through the African continent how little we really know about it. After some travel there I was surprised how I, and most of the rest of us in the world, had read interpretations into images that were incorrect. I was amazed by the beautiful simplicity of life and the values most African cultures teach. I knew about war and famine and corruption and AIDS but what great lessons I had yet to learn. A very dear friend from Cameroon advised me to go to Africa with an open heart and my photographer’s eyes wide open. I did. I went to learn and I did. After working in 18 African countries I came away with some very strong impressions. The impressions are documented in the images, aided by captions to understand what your American eyes are really looking at, as well as the reason behind many images we see.”
